The Indian Air Force is poised to receive two Tejas Mark 1A fighter jets shortly, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) scheduled to deliver them in October. Sources linked to the Ministry of Defence have confirmed this information. This delivery is part of a broader initiative to enhance India's air defense capabilities. The Tejas Mark 1A is a state-of-the-art single-engine multi-role fighter jet capable of performing various tasks, including air defense, maritime surveillance, and strike missions. The deployment of these jets is expected to significantly bolster the operational strength of the Air Force, incorporating advanced technologies that enhance their effectiveness.
Anticipated Testing and Delivery Timeline
The Indian Air Force anticipates the arrival of the two Tejas Mark 1A jets in October, despite facing a delay of nearly two years, which has raised concerns from the Air Force Chief on multiple occasions. According to HAL sources, the delivery is on track for October. Additionally, firing tests for the Tejas Mark 1A are scheduled for this month, which will include testing the Beyond Visual Range missile Astra, as well as short-range missiles like ASRAM and laser-guided bombs. The jets will only be delivered after successful completion of these tests.
Significant Expansion of Tejas Fleet
Recently, a report highlighted a significant achievement for the Make in India initiative, as the government approved the purchase of 97 more Tejas Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. This deal is estimated to be worth around ₹67,000 crores. Currently, the Air Force operates 38 Tejas jets, with an additional 80 under production. Following this new order, HAL's order book is expected to remain full for the next four to five years. However, the Tejas project has faced some challenges, particularly due to delays in engine deliveries.
